If your mail.box is filling with dead messages, that is a good sign that you have closed the open relay. Mail comes in from the spammers, but does not go out.
To further limit those messages, open your Messaging Configuration Document - Router/SMTP - Restrictions and Controls - SMTP Inbound Controls. Enable the field "Verify that local domain recipients exist in the Domino Directory." Restart the router task.
To test your configuration, telnet to your SMTP server on port 25. Try to send mail that isn't meant for your domain. That is, mail from: somename@gmail.com, rcpt to: somename@gmail.com.
